October 8 1839 –May 7 1901 ) was aNew Brunswick politician andjurist .He was elected to the first provincial
legislature of the newCanadian Confederation in 1867 and served in theConfederation Party government asminister without portfolio . WhenAndrew R. Wetmore resigned, the Confederation Party became theLiberal-Conservative s and King becamePremier in 1870. Some members of hiscaucus felt he was too close to the federal Conservatives of SirJohn A. Macdonald and King was maneuvered out of the leadership byGeorge L. Hathaway with King taking a position in the newcabinet . When Hathaway died in 1872, King becamePremier for a second time serving until 1878. One of King's major accomplishments was theCommon Schools Act of 1871 which implemented a single, tax supportedpublic school system.In 1880 he became a judge on the province's
supreme court and in 1893 he became a justice on theSupreme Court of Canada .On his passing in 1901, he was interred in the
Fernhill Cemetery inSaint John, New Brunswick .External links
