Darnis is a metropolitan
titular archbishop ric in the formerRoman province ofLibya , in the diocese ofEgypt .History
Ptolemy (IV, 4, 2; 5; 6) andAmmianus Marcellinus , (XXII, 16, 4) locate it in theLibyan Pentapolis . It became a civil and later the religious metropolis ofLibya Secunda , orLibya Inferior , i.e. Marmarica region (Hierocles, "Synecdemus " 734,3;Lequien , "Oriens Christianus" II, 631;Heinrich Gelzer , "Georgii Cyprii descripto orbis Romani", 142).Darne is another form of the name; Dardanis is due to an error. Only three, perhaps four, bishops are known, from the fourth or sixth century to about 600. The city is known in Islamic times as Derneh or Dernah, Terneh or Ternah, and became a port at the end of a bay formed by the Mediterranean, where the French admiral Gantheaume landed in 1700. Under Ottoman rule is was situated east ofBenhasi in the vilayet of that name (Tripolitana ), and had 2000 inhabitants, who lived by fishing and the coasting trade.ource
