"The Descent 2" is an upcoming British horror film, which follows where the original left off. The film is currently shooting in London. The film is being produced by Christian Colson and co - produced by Paul Ritchie with Neil Marshall, producer and director of the original, executive producing. The film's working title is "The De2cent".

Plot

The sequel will continue the story of Sarah, who as the only survivor of an all-female caving expedition gone horrifically wrong, suffers severe psychological trauma. Unable to speak, she accompanies a rescue team back to the cave, but events once again take a sinister turn.

"The Descent 2" picks up immediately after the events depicted in "The Descent". Sarah (Shauna MacDonald) emerges alone from a cave system following an expedition with her five friends in the Appalachian mountains. Distraught, injured and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Skeptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah's psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines forces her back into the caves to help locate the rest of the group, and to maybe rescue Juno. Trapped by falling rocks, the rescue party are driven deep into the caverns, and as one by one the fate of the missing girls is revealed, Sarah is forced to confront her deepest fears.

Due to the first film being a commercial and critical success, it was decided that a sequel would be produced. Although Marshall had no plans to direct the film, he told Bloody-Disgusting.com, "A treatment is in the works, I’m not directing it, but I will oversee it and want to be a part of it." Marshall received the first draft of the film in late July 2006, with no directors or cast in mind. He made it clear that this film won't be a "rehashing of the first" and that he wants this film to incorporate more of the feeling of claustrophobia like that of a particular scene in the previous film. Marshall tells Bloody-Disgusting.com about new ideas for the film, "The monsters they can deal with, and a bit of the claustrophobia, they can deal with, but the combination is definitely something we want to incorporate that into the sequel, by putting the monster and the girls in a really tight spot." When "The Descent" was released in 2006 in the United States, Lionsgate picked up the film as distributor and edited the last few minutes of the film, changing the ending. When Dreadcentral.com asked Marshall which of the film's two endings would the sequel would be picking up after, he said that it won't be known until he approves a script. Filming began in May 2008 at Ealing Studios in London. Ealing Studios was featured on BBC London in June 2008 going behind the scenes of the filming of 'Descent 2'. In that broadcast it was confirmed that Shauna Macdonald would be returning to play her character Sarah. As of yet, she is the only confirmed cast member though others were seen on the set (none positively identified). None of the other original cast members were mentioned or seen during the behind-the-scenes feature. The film is being shot on all three of the main sets at Ealing Studios. The film is being filmed using elaborate sets, miniatures, and blue screen digital images just as the first film. This was revealed on BBC London's behind the scenes look.
