Born onMay 25 ,1979 inOdessa, Texas , Lunsford attended Central High School inSan Angelo, Texas , then went toGrayson County College before transferring toTexas Tech University , where he played for the Red Raiders.Registered at 6'1", 195 pounds, Lunsford was originally drafted by the
Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 1998 draft (1096th overall). He decided not to sign. In 2000, he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 33rd round of the draft (991st overall). This time, he decided to sign.Being only a mediocre minor leaguer (he has hit a subpar .253 in the minors), Lunsford still managed to find a way into the Major Leagues. On
September 12 ,2002 , Lunsford made his Major League debut at the age of 23, without ever playing higher than the single-A level. In his first Major League at-bat, Lunsford singled in the 10th inning off Trevor Hoffman. In three games in 2002, he collected two hits in threeat-bat s, with one double, one RBI and astrikeout .
