Connacht Junior Cup

Connacht Junior Cup

Connacht Junior Cup is a rugby union knockout cup competition for clubs which do not have senior status in the Irish province of Connacht, the First XV's of "Senior" clubs participate in the All Ireland League competition while the First XV's of "Junior" clubs participate in their provincial Junior League.

Second XV's of Senior clubs like Galwegians RFC, Corinthians, Connemara and Buccaneers are also eligible to participate in this cup competition as they are deemed to be of an equal standard.

The cup was first played for in 1905, and was won by a side representing the Galway school St. Ignatius College (Galway), the first recorded club winners were Westport RFC in 1930.

Since the early 1990s both Athlone & Ballinasloe RFC were represented in the competition by their AIL amalgamation, Buccaneers (2nd XV). Currently Ballinasloe have moved away from the amalgamation and enter their own team in Junior competition.

In the 1980s and 1990s the Junior Clubs were extremely successful in winning the competition, however in the new millennium the Senior Clubs sides have won seven out of ten Cup Finals.
