Archimandrite Cyril

Archimandrite Cyril

The Archimandrite Cyril, formerly Ivan Dmitriyevich Pavlov ("Иван Дмитриевич Павлов"), is Archimandrite of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiyev Posad, and an elder of the Russian Orthodox Church.

After the end of World War II (where he served during the battle of Battle of Stalingrad), Pavlov attended the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, and in 1956 entered the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, taking the monastic name "Cyril" after the saint. Today, he is considered an elder of the Russian Orthodox Church, having been Confessor to the current Patriarch and his two predecessors, and at age 88 continues to give sermons. The Two Pavlovs

Ivan Pavlov has often been confused with Yakov Pavlov, a war hero of Stalingrad, possibly due to similarities in their biographies. Yakov Pavlov was earned the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his capture and defense of an apartment building that came to be known as "Pavlov's House".
