botanical garden located on theHana Highway (close to the convert|31|mi|km|sing=on marker) near Hāna,Maui ,Hawaii . It is one of five gardens of the non-profitNational Tropical Botanical Garden .The garden was established in 1972 on Maui's northern coast, with rugged black lava seascapes, and is surrounded by one of Hawaii's last undisturbed
pandanus forests. It also contains the Piokinailanihale Heiau, aNational Historic Landmark believed to be the largest ancient temple in Polynesia. Dating from the 16th century, it is constructed from lava blocks and is convert|341|ft|m by convert|415|ft|m in extent, with a convert|50|ft|m|sing=on high front wall.The garden's ethnobotanical collections focus on plants traditionally used by
Pacific Island people. It includes the world's largestbreadfruit collection, first established in the 1970s. Today the garden contains 220 accessions of approximately 120 varieties of breadfruit collected from field expeditions to over 17 Pacific island groups inPolynesia ,Micronesia , andMelanesia , as well asIndonesia , thePhilippines , and theSeychelles . This collection is used for research and conservation by NTBG’s Breadfruit Institute.Other garden holdings include
