Freeadvice is a free US legal information web service which was established in 1997. It has won extensive awards, including having been named by Forbes as a "Best of the Web", by PC World as one of the Best 125 Free Sites on the entire Web, as one of the 100 featured sites in PC Magazine’s Best 1000 websites, as the legal site of the year by Access Magazine, and to have repeatedly received accolades and top recognition in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post’s reviews of legal websites. Freeadvice.com was voted the most “extremely useful” consumer legal website in the 1998 USA TodayIntelliquest Poll.

Freeadvice is an affiliate of the Advice Company located in Sausalito, California and was founded and is still headed by an attorney. Other directly related affiliates of the Advice Company are 'Attorneypages' for locating an attorney and 'Expertpages' for locating an expert witness.

The answers on Freeadvice are prepared and updated by lawyers from leading law firms across the country to assist the consumer in dealing with legal issues. The site has grown to include information in just about every major legal area: accident and personal injury law, bankruptcy law, business law, criminal law, employment law, family law, insurance law, intellectual property law, real estate law, and wills, estates & trusts.

In 1999, Freeadvice introduced its 'Legal Forums' enabling its visitors to use their combined knowledge to answer specific questions not already addressed. Visitors can ask and receive advice from their peers as well as practicing attorneys who frequent the site and post their comments. Thousands of questions and responses have been posted since 1999 and all are available for the consumer to view.

Around 2000, Legal Forms provided by U.S. Legal Forms, Inc. were added to the site allowing consumers to cut out attorney costs by providing state specific forms and contracts for a reasonable fee. Today there are over 36,000 different forms available with two of the most popular being the residential lease form and the home sales package.

2004 saw a number of additions to the site including insurance information and advice and a free case review. These Q&A’s address topics provide information related to the buying of different types of insurance and issues related to dealing with insurance companies. Covered topics include: the types of coverage, how much coverage is needed, making and collecting on a claim, and insurance settlements.

A legal news blog is Freeadvice’s latest improvement in better serving the consumer with legal information. It was added the winter of 2006 and offers visitors the opportunity to read comments by legal experts and law bloggers responding to legal news, new cases, proposed legislation, etc.
