Hua Mei (giant panda)

Hua Mei (zh-ts|t=華美|s=华美); meaning: "China/USA") (b. August 21, 1999), is a female giant panda. She is the first giant panda cub to survive to adulthood in the United States. She was born to Bai Yun (mother) and Shi Shi (father) at the San Diego Zoo. She is the elder half-sister to three other cubs born to Bai Yun: Mei Sheng, Su Lin and Zhen Zhen.

In February 2004, upon reaching adulthood, Hua Mei was relocated to the Wolong Reserve in Sichuan Province, China, where she is reportedly doing very well. By the end of 2007, she has given birth to 3 sets of twins, male twins in 2004 (named Hua Ling and Mei Ling), male/female twins in 2005, and another set of male/female twins on 16 July 2007 [ [http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/200409/02/eng20040902_155736.html People's Daily Online: Returned panda gives birth to twin cubs] ] [ [http://www.newsgd.com/culture/culturenews/content/2007-07/17/content_4208496.htm Guangdong News: Panda Hua Mei gives birth to twins again] ] .
