Charlotte Preparatory School (CPS) is a college preparatory, co-educational day school located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Charlotte Montessori School was founded in the Dilworth area of Charlotte in 1971. The school moved to the southeast Charlotte campus off Sardis Road in 1992. In 1998 the school added a middle school and the name was changed to Charlotte Preparatory School.
CPS has a class average of 14 and 2 classes per grade. The small environment helps the student-teacher relationship. It also helps nurture the students more, as the teachers have the opportunity to spend more time helping the student, rather than at a larger private school.
The Early School (ages 3 through 5) is based upon the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Lower School (Kindergarten through 4th grade) is a bridge from the Montessori-based Early School to the more advanced curriculum and more independent structure of the Middle School. The Middle School (5th through 8th grades) presents an opportunity for high school and college preparation with a demanding and varied academic curriculum.
CPS's Head of School, Maura Leahy-Tucker, has led the school for almost 25 years. The school is privately owned, fiscally sound and operating within a balanced budget without required annual giving from the parents. CPS has more than 65 professional faculty members; 15 have Master's degrees and two hold a doctoral degree. The teachers bring an average of 12 years of teaching experience to each classroom. Charlotte Preparatory is the only for-profit school in Charlotte, North Carolina.
