Nihongo|"Kidō Shinsengumi Moeyo Ken"|機動新撰組 萌えよ剣| is an anime about Yuuko Kondo, Toshie Hijikata, and Kaoru Okita (respectively the daughters of Isami Kondo, Toshizo Hijikata, and Souji Okita), who are magical girl variants of Shinsengumi, a police force, and of Sakamoto Ryunosuke and his illegal companion, Nekomaru. Originally an OVA, it was also adapted into a television series. Moeyo Ken was created by Ouji Hiroi, creator of the Sakura Wars series, with character designs by Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha.

Plot

Set in an alternate universe Meiji Era, the lead male character of the story, Sakamoto Ryunosuke, is travelling from Shanghai towards Kyoto with his unlicensed youkai Nekomaru. The law in the story states that to be in legal possession of such a creature that it must be licensed. The Shinsengumi are enforcers of this law.

The Mobile Shinsengumi

Yuuko Kondo

Yuuko is the daughter of Isamu Kondo and field commander of the Mobile Shinsengumi. She has a habit of breaking her sword in battle.

Toshie Hijikata

Toshie is the daughter of Toshizo Hijikata and the Mobile Shinsengumi's crackshot sharpshooter. While she may be an expert on guns, she is not an excellent cook.

Kaoru Okita

Kaoru is the daughter of Soji Okita. She uses all sorts of weapons including shikigami of the legendary beasts (Genbu, Byakko, Seiryu and Suzaku). Kaoru takes it personally when she's told about her bust size.

Ryuunosuke Sakamoto

Ryuunosuke is the son of Ouryo, president of the Shinsengumi. Ryuunosuke recently returned from Shanghai and brought a monster named Nekomaru to Kyoto for registration. Ryuunosuke is a bit odd, but he is nevertheless determined to help out the Mobile Shinsengumi. He seems to also have a crush on Yuuko.

Nekomaru

Nekomaru is a bakeneko, a monster cat, who traveled with Ryuunosuke from Shanghai to Kyoto. Nekomaru also whines and cowers whenever there's trouble.

Gennai Hiraga

Every team needs a scientist and Gennai is the Mobile Shinsengumi's resident mad doctor building new weapons and gadgets to aid the team to stop unlicensed monsters from destroying Tokyo.

The Sumare Group

The Sumare Group are the villains in the Meji Era representing the new government and try to return monsters to their old selves before monster registration was effective. The compose of mean girl Miki Saotome, handsome and fearless Ukon Tanaka and the short and strange Sakon Suzuki.
