- Lal Salam
"Lal Salam" ( _hi. लाल सलाम, _bn. লাল সলাম, meaning 'Red Salute') is a salute, greeting or code word used by
communist s inIndia andNepal , which is used when both hello and goodbye would be used in English. InHindi (as well as several other South Asian languages) "Lal" meansred , the colour of communism, and "Salam " is anArabic /Persian loanword in use in India. In Arabic it literally means 'Peace', but this usage is in line with the Persian usage, with the meaning 'Salute'.This saying is used by the
Naxal andMaoists militants that operate in India and Nepal. It is usually a code word to define their ethos. On the proposed of any death of a soldier the term "Lal Salam" (red salute) is planned by the naxals as a tribute to the comrades killed.
Recently on June 12, 2008 the Naxal militants posted posters of "Lal Salam" in villages bordering by the Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh. The outfit of People's Liberation Front of India, was reportedly luring unemployed youths into anti-government activities.
There is a
Malayalam feature film by the same name which deals with the Naxalite movement.External links
