Longthorpe Tower

Longthorpe Tower

Longthorpe Tower is a fourteenth century, three-storey tower in the care of English Heritage, situated in the village of Longthorpe, now a district of Peterborough, about two miles (3 km) to the west of the city centre.

It was added in 1310 to a fortified manor house. The interior contains the best-surviving example of English mediæval wall paintings in northern Europe, which survived under a layer of whitewash. This varied "spiritual encyclopedia" of worldly and religious subjects includes the Wheel of Life, the Nativity and King David.

The site is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument protected by law. [cite web |title=Longthorpe Tower |url=http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=364093 |publisher=Pastscape.org.uk |accessdate=2008-01-04]
