Jim Runyon

Jim Runyon

Jim Runyon was a disk-jockey from the late 1950s until 1973, probably best known for his time at the 1100-AM frequency in Cleveland, Ohio. He first joined that station when Westinghouse Broadcasting assumed ownership of the station, installing the KYW calls from its former Philadelphia outlet that went to NBC. Jim is also know as the "weeeellll" voice of the "Chickenman" series.

When Westinghouse and NBC were ordered to re-trade the respective stations in 1965, Runyon went over to WCFL in Chicago. He did rejoin what became WKYC in October 1969, replacing Specs Howard in the morning-drive slot, and held onto that shift when the station became WWWE in 1972.

Jim Runyon announced his immediate resignation from WWWE on March 15, 1973, due to concerns about his health. Just weeks after resigning, Runyon died of cancer at the age of 42 on April 13. Runyon's memory was honored at a special Cleveland Indians game at Cleveland Municipal Stadium that May 4 with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
