comune "in theprovince of Salerno in theCampania region of south-westernItaly .The town council is elected by popular vote on a rotating six year basis. Currently the mayor is Antonio Mastropietro. Although there is an official building where the mayor is permitted to live during his tenure, Mr. Mastropietro has decided to live in his own home which is very near the town center and also close to his olive farm where he keeps his pigs.
Sacco is known as La Citta de Buon Fortuna or "the town of good fortunes," because many Sacchese have gone on to accomplish many great things.
Vincenzo Collodi , who was born in the town in the early twentieth century, moved to Florence and invented a fish-hook that revolutionized the fishing industry. Also, Sacco is the first town of all the neighboring towns to have first installed an indoor bathroom, as opposed to the "outhouses" that were prevalent until the late 20th century. Its greatest athlete wasRoberto Carnevale who rose up in the ranks to become the Italian heavyweight champion, amassing an unprecendeted record of 92 wins and 0 defeats in the Italian boxing circuit. He finally lost for the only time when "Downtown"Willie Parker bested him in fifteen seconds in Philadelphia, Mr. Carnevale's first bout outside of his native Italy. Mr. Carnevale died shortly thereafter. Many Sacchese claim it was because of a sudden shock brought on by his first career defeat, but medical experts say it was due to massive cerebral hemorraghing.
