Steve Raybine

Dr. Steve Raybine is a vibraphonist performing and teaching in Omaha, Nebraska. Originally named Stephen Rehbein, he changed his name to Raybine after several years of confusion with regards to pronunciation.

Biography

Steve studied percussion at the Eastman School of Music, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Iowa from which he received his Ph.D. In the mid-1970's, Raybine played for episodic and commercial television soundtracks at MGM, Universal, and Paramount recording studios, and was affiliated with ATV Publishing Corp. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Steve recorded two albums (Glider [1978] and City Slickers [1979] ) on Chrysalis Records with the progressive jazz group Auracle. During his Auracle years, Raybine performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland,; Frankfurt Jazz Festival in Frankfurt, Germany; and the Sopot Jazz Festival in Sopot, Poland.

According to his website, Raybine's freelance performance credits include Ed Shaughnessy, Dizzy Gillespie, Rick Braun, Leon 'Ndugu' Chancler, Michael Feinstein, Jack Jones, Roger Williams, Karrin Allyson, Dave Brubeck, as an opening act for Stanley Jordan, the Kansas City (MO) Jazz Conference, the Omaha Big Band, as well as local and regional orchestras.

Raybine has taught Jazz Studies and Percussion at several Universities, and has been featured on Nebraska Public Radio and Nebraska Educational Television. He had headed the University of Nebraska at Omaha percussion department for several years before his retirement from collegiate pedagogy and he was until recently the Nebraska Chapter President of the Percussive Arts Society. He has presented research papers at the International Association of Jazz Educators(IAJE) conferences. Raybine has had numerous articles published in Percussive Notes and Sticks and Mallets, most notably with regards to his pioneering work with MIDI pickup systems for the vibraphone and the related effects made possible by that device.

In 1997, he received the Jazz Educator of the year Award for the State of Nebraska from the National Band Association. Raybine is a Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) composer, an artist and clinician with Ludwig-Musser, endorses Mike Balter Mallets, and is the owner of SAR Music, LLC. He is currently teaching privately and performing in Omaha, NE.

Steve has also maintained a relationship with former Omaha area vibist and engineer John Piper, who collaborated with the Musser company to create their M-58 Musser/Piper model vibraphone - Steve owns and uses one of Piper's prototype instruments.
