XML Interface to Messaging, Scheduling, and Signaling ("XIMSS") is an XML-based
API for IP Communications. The XIMSS interface or API was introduced into the
CommuniGate Pro Internet Communications Platform starting with ver5.1 in Summer 2006 with the goal to allow rapid extensibility and touch points to the platform byweb development skill sets. One of the larger or looming problems of IP Communications, especially in the open standards segment is development of rich clients that arecross platform , and include all or most aspects of IP Communications like calendaring, email, voice calling,Instant messaging , and presence capabilities.Communigate Systems found that there were missing parts of many of the UIs on the market in the early part of 2003, especially for SIP and
instant messaging . While there were some clients likeWindows Messenger , or Counterpath’s Eyebeam, there tended to be areas that lacked solid performance or support such as platforms like Mac OS X, or video capabilities larger than a grainy postage stamp. Looking at the opensource community at the time, there were few free and open SIP based clients, and little activity around calendaring and email clients with presence capabilities. One of the major obstacles at the time was the long learning curve or the SIP protocol, coupled with skill sets forIMAP or Calendaring in the areas of user agent development shops or individuals.External links
