Betty Limpany

Betty Limpany

Betty Limpany was one of the last women in Devon to be executed during the 18th Century. She was accused of arson by burning down her Master's house. Her trial was swift and she was hanged on the 5th April 1799. She was only 17 years old.

In 1997 Diamond 7 Television in Leicester screened a film based on the famous case. It was filmed on location in Belgrave Hall, Leicester, and Kentisbere Devon, and produced by Wide Angle Productions.

Trivia

* It is rumoured that Betty Limpany was pregnant with her Master's baby when she was hung. Although this has never been proved.
