Taipei . The name "Shilin" was derived from Pattsiran, the Ketagalan word for "hot spring ". It was then transliterated into Chinese as "八芝蘭" Bāzhīlán, and finally re-analyzed as "scholars as many as the trees in the woods" (士多如林).Shilin is foremost a residential district and has several famous neighbourhoods, such as
Waishuangxi (外雙溪) andTianmu .Kuomintang leaderChiang Kai-Shek lived in Shilin after he moved the Chinese nationalist government toTaiwan . A large foreign population lives in Shilin; mainly concentrated in the Tianmu area. Both theTaipei American School and theTaipei Japanese School are located in this district. (Shilin even has aMormon chapel.) Tourist attractions include theYangmingshan National Park , theNational Palace Museum ,Chiang Kai-shek 's residence (士林官邸), and theShilin Night Market .Shilin has three universities:
Ming Chuan University , Soochow University, and theChinese Culture University .The central command of the R.O.C. Navy is in Shilin.
