As of November, 2006, NEADS has taken over theSoutheast Air Defense Sector 's airspace, giving NEADS the responsibility of providing detection and air defense for the eastern half of the United States. The sector's western perimeter runs along theMississippi River , cutting east aboveMississippi and down betweenMississippi andAlabama . The eastern perimeter of the sector is theAtlantic Ocean , and the northern perimeter is the Canadian border. It has not been determined whether NEADS will officially be called the Eastern Air Defense Sector or just the Eastern Defense Sector, thus remaining as NEADS until theUnited States Air Force finalizes the decision.NEADS is operated by the
Air National Guard (ANG) and reports to the Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR) headquarters, inPanama City, Florida , which in turn reports to NORAD headquarters, inColorado Springs, Colorado .
