The University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field, is a 18,500-capacity
stadium located in downtownCharleston, West Virginia , near the state capitol building complex. It features aFieldTurf playing field forfootball and facilities fortrack and field competitions.The stadium was finished in
1979 , as a complete rebuild of a previous facility. It is owned byKanawha County Schools . In2003 , because the Board lacked funds to maintain the stadium, it entered into a joint venture with the privateUniversity of Charleston to rename the field and permit its use for a revived football team for that school, in return for the college funding repairs and improvements. These improvements included replacing theAstroTurf surface withFieldTurf in the summer of 2005.The stadium is home to the
West Virginia Chaos soccer team, the University of Charleston Golden Eagles,Capital High School andGeorge Washington High School football and track, and multiplemiddle school and community teams. It hosts the state high school track and field championships. It also hosts theDaily Mail Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival at the end of September of each year. The University of Charleston has established school football attendance records with crowds of nearing 10,000 during each of the past two seasons.
