Mini sleeve gastrectomy

Mini sleeve gastrectomy

Mini sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure, where the stomach is stapled and turned into a sleeve, having a diameter equal to or slightly less than the duodenum. Such an operation is performed laparoscopically (Videoscopically). Usually the operation is for super obese patients, helping them reach their ideal weight.

The procedure was thought of by Dr. Aniceto Baltasar in Spain, who is known to be a pioneer in bariatric surgery there. Dr Sami Salem Ahmad from the Roserklinik in Germany is also involved in the research of the efficiency of this procedure, thinking that it could give rise to substantial changes in the field of bariatric surgery.

This procedure does not involve any anastomsis, so theorotically, the risks of such an operation should be lower than the risks of an RNY Gastric bypass. But still, there has not been clear evidence as the number of publications in this field is till this stage low, and surgeons are working on getting clear results by comparing a large number of operated patients, and that may still need a little bit of time.
