A transfer station is a building for the temporary deposition of some wastes. Transfer stations are often used as places where local waste collection vehicles will deposit their waste cargo prior to loading into larger vehicles. These larger vehicles will transport the waste to the end point of disposal or treatment.

It is possible that in the future we will recover usable material from our waste in material recovery facilities and with localised mechanical biological treatment systems.

A transfer station is defined as a solid waste processing site where solid waste is transferred from one vehicle to another vehicle or storage device for temporary storage until transferred to a permanent disposal site approved the solid waste management authority or permitted by any other solid waste management authority having jurisdiction over the location of ther permanent disposal site.
