Everybody's Changing

"Everybody's Changing" was Keane's first hit and the song that allow them to sign with Fierce Panda and later with Island Records. It was one of biggest hits through 2004. Despite the fact that release did not reach top 4, it was one of the main singles on "Hopes and Fears". The single was released twice, firstly by Fierce Panda and one year later by Island.

omewhere Only We Know

This is, perhaps, Keane's most famous song due to its several appearances on television. It was the most successful Keane single until "Is It Any Wonder?", reaching the top 3 in UK. It also has been featured on movie trailers and videogames. Keane have not given a specific meaning for the song, but it has been related with trees (see main article for details). The song was the first single released on the "Hopes and Fears era" in February 16 2004. The design of the covers remained until late 2005.

Hopes and Fears

"Hopes and Fears" is Keane's debut album and also their most successful release to date, with over 5,500,000 copies sold worldwide, number expecting to be succeeded by "Under the Iron Sea" (currently sold around 2,000,000).
The five single-album reached the top 1 with 155,373 copies during its first week in the UK. First, third and fifth week remained at number two, tooping on the second, fourth and sixth. It came out from the top ten in its 23rd week, returning to top 1 after winning a BRIT Award in its 40th week to finally disappear from the top in its 45th week. However, it remained on the UK Albums Chart for 72 weeks, reappearing with the release of "Under the Iron Sea". It returned to charts after the release of "Under the Iron Sea", reaching the top 54 on its 117th week of sale.

Is It Any Wonder?

Officially the second single from "Under the Iron Sea", "Is It Any Wonder?" is Keane's most successful single to date. Released in May 29 2006, the single quickly reached the top 1 on iTunes digital shop, and the top 3 on the UK Singles Chart. This song increased the fame of Keane in the United States, broadening their audience.

Under the Iron Sea

Released officially in June 12 2006, the album sold 222,297 during its first week (66,924 more than its predecessor) topping the charts for two weeks. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S.

ingles

Several Keane releases are considered nowadays as collection items, such as the rare single "Everybody's Changing" Part 1 (From Fierce Panda, not from Island) or the vinyl versions of the records. However, the recordings of this releases had been leaked into the Internet. Both two studio albums from Keane had topped the UK Albums Chart and only "Under the Iron Sea" made #4 on the Billboard 200 (US), an acceptable number compared with its predecessor (#45).

Notes

*The first release of "This Is the Last Time" was ineligible for the UK singles chart due to a weblink on the CD.
*Somewhere Only We Know made #32 on US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and #50 on US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
*A video download single, "Atlantic" was released on April 21, 2006. Later was released as a 7" Vinyl.

Do They Know It's Christmas?

Tom Chaplin and Tim Rice-Oxley participated on the Band Aid's classic Christmas song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" re-recording in 2005.

Information about early songs

A Heart To Hold You

A very old song, originally referred to as "The Bing Crosby Song", "The Bing Crosby Number" or "The Bing Crosby One", which was recorded for BBC Radio 1 on the 24th of November 2004 at the BBC Radio's Maida Vale studios. Never released, it is nevertheless well-known by some fans of the band as a recording from this session was leaked onto the Internet in 2005. There were even polyphonic ringtones made of it.

Keane were asked to do a Christmas song to be played on BBC Radio 1 on Christmas Eve. Tom said to Radio 1 "It's a really lovely song and one that is very close to our hearts. When we were asked to do a Christmassy-type song for Radio 1 there were some awful cheesy Christmas songs and we really racked our brains to think of something we'd be alright covering. But, in the end, we thought we'd do something of our own".
Tim Rice-Oxley, pianist of the band composed the song. The instrumentation does not include drums but a tambourine and the piano. Rice-Oxley has never given a meaning to this song, but the lyrics express trust and love for someone. The song was originally intended to be presented in the film "Love Actually" but was retired. The song was only given a proper title the week of it first being played on radio.

It was first played on the Jo Whiley Show, on BBC Radio 1, on December 3, 2004. It was played during that week every day. The song, referred to now by Radio 1 as a "Christmas Anthem", was played again on December 11 2005 on the same show.

Later, Keane covered Irving Berlin's Christmas classic "White Christmas". This version featured some lyrics invented by Keane and the including of the first original chorus, frequently omitted by other artists. As "A Heart To Hold You", this has never been officially released but the recording has been played on Steve Lamacq's Evening Show on Radio 1.

If Not You

It was composed circa August 2000. It was played several times at the pubs where Keane used to play but there are no recordings of this.

Maps

It was composed circa July 2000 and first played at the Monarch pub. It was released as a demo on September 14 2000 on the Keane Official Page.

The Happy Soldier

Considered the most rare recording of Keane ever made, this song was leaked from a sampler CD from the James Sanger recording sessions in late 2001.

The band specifically do not want this recording to be distributed as it is written to a very different perspective to any of their other work - a positive view to war. Those who actually found the recording distributed it between themselves, and so many Keane fans have the song.
This song was also the last Keane recording with guitar, and so marks the transition to the piano era of the band.

The Silence Of An Alien

Tom Chaplin mentions this song on "Strangers", with him providing the lyrics and Duncan Elliot the music. Chaplin mentions he composed his first song when he was about 13 years old. As this was probably the first Keane song ever it could have been composed circa 1991.
