Wilson was born in
Enniskillen ,County Fermanagh ,Northern Ireland and emigrated toAustralia with his family when he was a young child. He spent much of his childhood in Victoria where he picked up the nickname Rondog and completed a law degree in Darwin,Northern Territory . WhenCyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin in 1974, Ron was on scene as a reporter for a local telelvision station. Wilson worked as a newsreader on "
Good Morning Australia " from 1982-91, alongsideKerri-Anne Kennerly ,Tim Webster ,Sue Kellaway ,Gordon Elliot ,Terry Willesee andMike Gibson . During that time, he also presented Ten Sydney's weekend newscasts (variously called "Ten Eyewitness News", "Ten News ", "Eyewitness News" and "Ten Evening News"). In 1992 Wilson took the helm of "Good Morning Australia " as co-anchor with Sandra Sully. A year later the pair moved from dawn to dusk, co-anchoringTEN-10 's 5:00pm newscast and marking Wilson's debut as regular anchor of a weeknight bulletin. In 1994 Wilson was joined at the Sydney newsdesk byJuanita Phillips and, 2 years later, byJessica Rowe in a partnership that lasted 10 years.
