"Spoonful" is a blues standard written by Willie Dixon and lyrically based on Charley Patton's "Spoonful Blues". [Koda, Cub. [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=33:dn6at978klox "Song Review"] . All Music Guide, ©2006.] It is commonly associated with Howlin' Wolf, Dixon's longtime collaborator, who first recorded the song in 1960 (as Chess single 1762), [" [http://koti.mbnet.fi/wdd/chess.htm Chess Records - Discography] "] and later included it in his album "Howlin' Wolf" (1962), also called "The Rockin' Chair Album". The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame listed it as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll. [ [http://www.rockhall.com/exhibithighlights/500-songs-gj/ 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll] ]

Performing with Howlin' Wolf's vocals on the single are Hubert Sumlin (guitar), Otis Spann (piano), Willie Dixon (bass), and Fred Below (drums).

The British blues-rock band Cream covered "Spoonful" on their 1966 debut album, "Fresh Cream", and frequently played it in concert; their onstage jams on the number could reach past the fifteen-minute mark.cite web |title=Top 5 60’s Blues Songs |publisher=Play-Blues-Guitar.com |accessdate=2008-08-07 |url=http://play-blues-guitar.com/lists/top-5-60s-blues-songs/] The Winterland concert rendition on their 1968 album "Wheels of Fire" clocks in at nearly seventeen minutes.

"Spoonful" has also been recorded by artists such as Etta James (on her album "At Last!"), the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Dion DiMucci, the Allman Joys, Ten Years After, Gov't Mule, The Who, Johnny Diesel ("Short Cool Ones") and Blues Creation.
