- Satella Harvenheit
is a fictional character from the "
Chrono Crusade " anime and manga series. A jewel summoner and an exterminator of demons, she holds a strong grudge against all demons. She searches for the hornless demon responsible for her family's death as well as any remaining family members.__TOC__Early life
Satella was born in
Germany to a wealthy family which specialized in jewel summoning. She shared a strong bond with her sister, Florette. Ten years prior to the start of the story, Satella’s family was attacked by an unknown, hornless devil. This was later revealed to be Aion, the primaryantagonist of the show. Florette fought against Aion, but was easily defeated and taken away. Satella was left alone with a destroyed home, leaving only herself, Florette, and the family butler, Steiner, as survivors of the attack.Satella then traveled to America in order to find clues that would lead to the whereabouts of her sister. She became a
bounty hunter of demons, taking clients and earning the nickname “Jewel Witch.”During one of her cases, she meets
Rosette Christopher , Chrono and Azmaria. At first, she attempts to attack Chrono, due to his demonic nature. She also begins a tense relationship with Rosette, as the two constantly try to best each other. However, tensions between the two begin to cease, and they soon become close companions. In
San Francisco , Satella takes a job investigating haunted catacombs and eliminating the evil presence there. She is met by a devil worshipper, who quickly rendered her jewel summoning abilities useless. The devil worshipper planned to sacrifice her to a devil, Aion.Aion then arrives and reveals that it was he who attacked the Harvenheits, and that Florette (who now goes by the name Fiore) is now his servant. As he goes to attack Satella, Rosette and company move in to rescue her. After this incident, Satella's jewel powers become significantly weaker due to emotional shock. A conversation with Azmaria at a carnival later gives her the confidence to use her powers once again.
However, Satella's following encounters with Fiore show that Satella is still plagued by confusion. During Aion's attack on a dying Steiner and Rosette, Satella is blocked by Fiore from entering the battle. Not willing to fight her sister, Satella is unable to do anything. Later, Chrono, Azmaria and Satella try to find Joshua, who had been abducted by Fiore. Chrono and Azmaria managed to get Joshua back, while Satella transported herself and Fiore to an alternate dimension via jewel summoning.
In the final showdown, Satella fights with her Brave May, while Fiore fights with her Pure September . During the battle, Satella tries desperately to get her sister to remember her. The battle rages on until Fiore and Satella strike each other with powerful blasts. As she died in her sister's arms, Fiore finally seemed to remember her sister.
Chrono and Azmaria eventually find Satella leaning against a tree, mortally wounded. As she lays dying, she requests that Chrono free Rosette from her past and Azmaria sing her a song one last time.
In the Manga
In the manga, she was introduced in New York when investigating a suspicious shipment for the mafia. This shipment actually contained zombies that went berserk, forcing Satella and Rosette, who had followed a clue about Joshua and had arrived at New York, to fight them. They were at odds at first, due to Satella's haughty attitude and Rosette's brashness. Rosette even attempted to shoot Mutiger Stier, which destroyed her car, out of anger. However, they learn to cooperate, and drive the zombies away. In the process, Mutiger Stier accidentally destroys a building. This dislodged debris which threatened to bury Chrono, Rosette, and Azmaria, until Chrono unsealed his powers and saved them.
Realizing that Chrono is a hornless demon, Satella attempts to interrogate him. Before she can do so, she is trapped together with Chrono and Azmaria within a pocket dimension unsealed by the surviving member of mafia, who was the source of the zombie attack the day before. Because of the nature of the dimension, her jewel summoning abilities become useless. Inside, she sees that, although Chrono is a fierce and vicious demon when locked in combat, he is also as compassionate and caring as any human, and was even willing to sacrifice himself to protect his comrades. After escaping, Satella quickly interrogates Chrono about his whereabouts ten years ago, when he was still sealed in Magdalene's tomb.
To repay the damage she had done to Rosette's car, she invites Rosette's party to her house. During the banquet, they learn about each other's motivations. Satella then decides to join Rosette's party, and make sure Rosette pays for the fine arts she accidentally destroyed at the banquet.
Also during the party, we learn that Setella is only 19 years old and has a massive fortune.
During a battle with Fiore in chapter 47, she unsuccessfully attempts to make her sister recognize her. Fiore, in turn, simply says that she's just a doll created using Florette's body. After Fiore defeats all of her summoning attempts, Satella seals herself along with Fiore, "freezing" them together in time.
70 years later, she and Fiore were found on the US coastline by the Hendrics Foundation, which attempted, unsuccessfully, to "defrost" them. However, for some unknown reason, they were "unfrozen" a month after Azmaria died. Satella was last seen visiting Rosette's grave where, despite being in a classified location, flowers are left every year. Fiore, who had disappeared immediately after being defrosted, is seen in good condition along with Shader, who survived the destruction of Pandemonium. Fiore silently bids farewell to her sister, as Satella leaves her time-freezing earrings on Rosettes grave, promising to live her life to the fullest.
