USS "Corregidor" (CVE-58) was an "Casablanca" class
escort carrier of theUnited States Navy .She was laid down as "Auguilla Bay" (AVG-58) was reclassified ACV-58,
20 August 1942 and launched as "Corregidor" on12 May 1943 by theKaiser Shipbuilding Company , ofVancouver, Washington , under aMaritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs. J. Hallett. She was reclassified CVE-58 on15 July 1943 , acquired by the Navy on31 August 1943 ; and commissioned the same day, with Captain R. L. Bowman in command.Clearing
San Diego, California , on26 October 1943 , "Corregidor" joinedCarrier Division 24 atPearl Harbor for air strikes in the Gilbert Islands invasion from10 November to6 December . She returned to San Diego to undergo repairs and loadaircraft and men, then resumed operations out of Pearl Harbor with her division. From22 January to3 March 1944 , she sailed in the Marshalls operation, providing air cover for the invasion ofKwajalein ."Corregidor" put to sea on
11 March 1944 forGuadalcanal , arriving there on21 March . With the Third Fleet, she sortied on30 March to provide air cover for the landings onEmirau Island , returning toPort Purvis on14 April . Two days later, she sailed to join the7th Fleet for air operations at Hollandia (currently known as Jayapura) between22 April and26 April , then put in toManus Island for replenishment and antisubmarine patrols until4 May . Embarking Commander, Carrier Division 24 for theMarianas operation, "Corregidor" provided combat air patrols andanti-aircraft support for the invasion ofSaipan from15 June to25 June , with her aircraft accounting for at least eight enemy planes. She covered the logistics force offEniwetok from1 July to3 July , then aided in the softening up bombardment ofGuam and provided air cover for the invasion, until28 July when she returned to San Diego for overhaul.She worked on qualifying pilots in carrier operations at Pearl Harbor from
12 October until21 November 1944 . On26 October , she formed as a hunter-killer group withEscort Division 64 , around to check out reported enemysubmarine movements between Pearl Harbor and California. On2 January 1945 , this group moved to patrol the area between Pearl Harbor andEniwetok to protect heavy Allied shipping, returning to Pearl Harbor on13 February ."Corregidor" sailed from Pearl Harbor on
27 February to search for an overdue plane carryingLieutenant General M. F. Harmon , USA, arriving atMajuro on20 March . From21 March to27 April , she conducted ananti-submarine patrol in the vicinity of Japanese-heldWotje andMaloelap in the Marshalls, then offEniwetok .Returning to Pearl Harbor on
4 May 1945 , "Corregidor" was assigned duty as a training ship inHawaii , conducting carrier pilot qualifications until the end of the war. From2 October 1945 to10 January 1946 , she alternated this duty with three voyages from Pearl Harbor toSan Diego to return homeward-bound servicemen. "Corregidor" cleared San Diego on18 January 1946 forNorfolk, Virginia , arriving there on4 February . Here she was placed out of commission in reserve on30 July 1946 .Recommissioned on
19 May 1951 , "Corregidor" was assigned to operate with theMilitary Sea Transportation Service . She ferried men, aircraft, and aviation cargo toNATO nations under theMutual Defense Assistance Plan , but also made five voyages through thePanama Canal to bring men and cargo to theUnited Nations forces inKorea in 1952, 1953, and 1954. "Corregidor" was reclassified CVU-58 on12 June 1955 . When theLebanon crisis broke in the summer of 1958, "Corregidor" was atBrindisi ,Italy , and immediately lifted two reconnaissance planes of the24th Infantry Regiment , and 10 helicopters to support the landings inLebanon . Returning to theUnited States , "Corregidor" was decommissioned on4 September 1958 , and sold for scrap on28 April 1959 ."Corregidor" received four
