high school located inRio Rancho ,New Mexico . Much of the money to build RRHS was appropriated by theIntel Corporation. The school is unique in that there has not been a freshman class sinceRio Rancho Mid-High opened up and that the school is organized into 5 academies: Business & Entrepreneurship, Engineering & Design, Fine Arts, Humanities, and SciMatics.History
Rio Rancho High School opened in the Fall of 1997, obtaining most of its students from nearby
Cibola High School and Del Norte High School, both in Albuquerque. The following year, the "First Year Academy" was created in order to better integrate the incoming freshmen into the school. The school rapidly grew to be the state's largest and held that distinction for 3 years, from 1999 through 2002, peaking enrollment at close to 3200 students. The school district then opened theRio Rancho Mid-High School in the Fall of 2002, which took the incoming 8th grade students from the middle schools and the incoming 9th grade students from the high school leaving the current 10th through 12th grade system that is in place today.Growth
The city of
Rio Rancho is one of the fastest growing communities in the state, and it is the second fastest growing city in the USA (second to Las Vegas, NV) [citation needed] . It has become necessary for theRio Rancho Public Schools to begin the building of a new high school to relieve the overcrowding. To that goal, a new school,V. Sue Cleveland High School , is under construction and is scheduled to open in August 2009. The current 4 block schedule will change to a more traditional 8 period schedule beginning in August 2008. A shift in the graduation requirements will also be implemented, resulting in 28 credits needed to graduate vs. the 29 currently needed. A typical schedule will consist of 8 periods; including one lunch, one advisory class, two electives and four core courses.
Planned changes in 2009
Beginning in August 2009, all incoming 9th through 11th grade students residing south of Northern Blvd will attend Rio Rancho High School and all residing north of Northern Blvd will attend V. Sue Cleveland High School. The class of 2010, the incoming senior class, will continue to attend Rio Rancho High School regardless of where they reside in Rio Rancho.Due to budget cuts V. Sue Cleveland High School may not be opened unless a 10,000,000 dollar bailout comes into play.
