anime convention in theCincinnati/Northern Kentucky metropolitan area . The first three SugoiCons were held informally in "Joe's garage" inDayton, Ohio as an annual fan gathering of friends from the area, in honor of the creator of theUrusei Yatsura fanfic character "Sugoi", Fred Lee Cain. The first major gathering, SugoiCon IV, took place at a since-demolished convention center in 1996. About 150 people attended SugoiCon IV. SugoiCon went back to "Joe's garage" for V-VII. In 2000, the non-profit organizationSouthwestern Ohio Regional Animation began to host SugoiCon as a public convention.SugoiCon's stated goal is to give appreciation to anime artists; among their guests have been
Takao Koyama , the chief writer for shows such as Dragon Ball andSaint Seiya . The programming at SugoiCon changes every year. Past activities at the convention have included video rooms, workshops, guest panels, karaoke, dances, concerts, and cosplay. The founders of SugoiCon never decided on the official spacing of the name, so both "SugoiCon" and "Sugoi Con" are valid.
