USS "Limestone" (IX-158), a "Trefoil"-class concrete barge designated an
unclassified miscellaneous vessel , was the only ship of theUnited States Navy to be named forlimestone , a rock consisting chiefly ofcalcium carbonate , which yields lime when burned."Limestone" (IX-158) and "Corundum" (IX-164) swapped identities on
23 May 1944 , prior to their acquisition by the Navy. Both were constructed under a Maritime Commission contract (T. B7-D1-Barge) byBarrett & Hilp ,Belair Shipyard , in SouthSan Francisco .M. C. Hull 1332 was laid down
19 October 1943 . She was launched on31 December 1943 sponsored by Mrs. William O.Neill and named "Limestone" (IX-158) on7 February 1944 .M. C. Hull 1338 was laid down
5 January 1944 . She was named "Corundum" (IX-164) on7 February 1944 and launched25 March 1944 sponsored by Mrs. Leo Heagerty.After renaming, the new "Limestone" (M. C. Hull 1338) was acquired by the Navy
14 October 1944 and placed in service the same day. She was towed toSubic Bay ,Philippine Islands , for use as aUnited States Army andUnited States Marine Corps stores barge. "Limestone" served near the advance bases in the Pacific until she returned to the United States in1946 . She was placed out of service12 December 1946 atSeattle, Washington , and was sold toFoss Launch & Tug Company on11 September 1947 .References
