date-dens=1999Pomerol is a commune in the
Gironde department inAquitaine in southwesternFrance .It is located near
Bordeaux .Wine
The mostly small-sized producers in this area of about 7.60 km² produce plummy, generous, long lived red wines. As in the neighbouring appellation of
St Emilion , the predominant grape variety used isMerlot , often together withCabernet Franc and smaller quantities ofCabernet Sauvignon . Unlike other Bordeaux regions, there is no official ranking or classification system for the wines in Pomerol. However despite this, wines such asChâteau Pétrus andChâteau Le Pin are considered the equal of, and will command similarly high prices to, the classified first growths of theMédoc andSaint-Émilion such asChâteau Latour andChâteau Cheval Blanc .The next-door and slightly larger "satellite" appellation of
Lalande de Pomerol produces similar but simpler wines, which are less long lived and more affordable.ee also
