D. Paio Peres Correia, a notable medieval Christian conqueror, who was born c. 1205, in
Monte de Fralães , in the district ofBarcelos in what is nowPortugal .In 1242, in Mérida he became Grand-Master of the military
Order of Santiago (more properly the MilitaryOrder of St. James of the Sword ); from here he then entered into the service of Fernando III of Castile (Ferdinand III, the Saint) and his son, the futureAlfonso X of Castile .D. Paio Peres Correia is remembered in the place-names and street names in many cities and villages in
Portugal andSpain , asSetúbal ,Silves ,Tavira ,Seville (Triana quarter), etc.The Village of Paio Pires, in
Seixal is named for him.
