Paio Peres Correia

D. Paio Peres Correia, a notable medieval Christian conqueror, who was born c. 1205, in Monte de Fralães, in the district of Barcelos in what is now Portugal.

In 1242, in Mérida he became Grand-Master of the military Order of Santiago (more properly the Military Order of St. James of the Sword); from here he then entered into the service of Fernando III of Castile (Ferdinand III, the Saint) and his son, the future Alfonso X of Castile.

D. Paio Peres Correia is remembered in the place-names and street names in many cities and villages in Portugal and Spain, as Setúbal, Silves, Tavira, Seville (Triana quarter), etc.

The Village of Paio Pires, in Seixal is named for him.
