Hølonda

Hølonda

Hølonda is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway.

Hølonda was separated from Melhus in 1865. The new municipality had a population of 1,818.

On 1 January 1964 Hølonda was reincorporated into Melhus. Prior to the merger Hølonda had a population of 1,428.

The name

The Old Norse form of the name was "Høylönd". The first element is "høy" n 'hay', the last element is the plural form of "land" n 'land, district'.

Until 1889 the name was written "Høilandet", in the period 1889-1931 "Hølandet", from 1932 on "Hølonda". (See also the names of Høland and Høylandet.)
