Jazira

[Al] Jazira (جزيرة) means " [the] island" or " [the] peninsula" in Arabic, and may refer to:

*Arabian peninsula — also called Al Jazeera
*Al Jazira, Mesopotamia — the river plain of Mesopotamia, which encompasses northeastern Syria and northwestern Iraq.
*Al Jazirah, Sharjah, a settlement in Sharjah.
*Al Jazirah (state) in Sudan.
*Gezira Island — is an island on the river Nile in central Cairo, best known for its up-market residential district Zamalek.
*Algeciras — a city in Cádiz province, southern Spain, near Gibraltar.
*Al Jazeera — a major Arabic television network and channel, based in Qatar.
**Al Jazeera English — the Al Jazeera network's English 24h news channel, based in Qatar, Malaysia, the UK, and the US.
*Aljazeera.com — a London-based publication.
*Al-Jazeerah Information Center — an independent U.S. publication which comments on issues of Middle Eastern and world politics.
*Al-Jazeera Club — a sports team in the United Arab Emirates.
*Jazeera Airways — An airlines company based in Kuwait
*Al Jazira Supermarket — a supermarket chain in Bahrain.
*Madina al Jazira, the Arabic name of the town of Ciutadella.

Other possible transcriptions include: Jazeera, Jazira, Jazeerah, Gezirah, Gazirah, Gazira, Gazeera, Gazeerah, Gezeerah. The Arabic definite article "al" is not always included, but if it is included, it may then be perceived as incorrect to say "the al Jazira" (two definite articles). However, where the "al" has become part of a brand name, this may in fact be preferred; e.g. it might be preferred to refer to "the Al Jazeera TV channel" instead of "Al Jazeera TV channel".
