Detroit in 1959, and was interested inpsychology ,photography andcinematography in childhood. In 1977 she enrolled at theUniversity of Michigan for a double major inneurophysiology and film / video.Fact|date=June 2007In 1979 she visited a local
ashram under the guidance of SwamiMuktananda and converted toHinduism Fact|date=April 2008. She joined the ashram as a full-time member and remained there for ten years. She was known by theSanskrit name of "Kumuda", or night-lotus.
