French Expeditionary Force

French Expeditionary Force

The French Expeditionary Force was a French World War I military unit consisting of the 10th army. Its forces moved into Italy in 1917 alongside the British Expeditionary Force (Italy) at the request of the Italian Supreme Commander, General Luigi Cadorna. The Italians had been pushed back at the Battle of Caporetto by German reinforced Austro-Hungarian divisions. French forces were settled mostly west of the city of Verona, supposedly to counter a rumoured offensive by Austro-Hungarian forces that would purportedly come from Tyrol via the Adige river valley.
