May 9 ,1968 ,Pasadena, California ) is an Americansoccer player and longtime member and captain of theUnited States women's national soccer team . She is a member of theNational Soccer Hall of Fame .Overbeck, a central defender, grew up in
Richardson, Texas , where she attendedRichardson High School . She played college soccer at theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , whose team won theNCAA Women's Soccer Championship each of Overbeck's four seasons there. She first appeared with the U.S. national team onJune 1 ,1988 , and was a member of the U.S. team that won the firstFIFA Women's World Cup in 1991. She was one of two players to play every minute of each of the team's games at the 1995 Women's World Cup, the 1996 Summer Olympics, and the 1999 Women's World Cup. She retired from international competition following the 2000 Summer Olympics, finishing her career with an impressive 168 caps.She played for the Raleigh Wings of the
W-League and theCarolina Courage of the WUSA.Overbeck was inducted into the
