Capital Breakfast with Johnny Vaughan

Capital Breakfast with Johnny Vaughan

In April of 2004 Johnny Vaughan became Chris Tarrant’s successor on the Capital Radio London Breakfast Show. The show broadcasts from 6am till 10am (as of July 9 2007) Monday to Friday on 95.8 FM London. Ever since the arrival of Denise Van Outen in Ferbruary 2008, the show has slipped. Vaughan now spends more time talking to his co-host Van Outen than the audience which has made the audience feel alienated. This feeling was highlighted when Van Outen went on leave on June & July 2008 and Lisa Snowdon stood in as her replacement.

Regular Features

"Welshy Calling"

Around the time of the Capital Radio Tune-Up, a new feature called ‘London Calling’ was formed for the Breakfast Show. This involved a caller to the show keeping a foreigner on the phone for thirty seconds while speaking nonsense. This then became a member of the team calling someone and talking nonsense while the caller guessed how long they would stay on the line for. Johnny effectively tells the caller which is the correct answer by raising his voice on either “MORE” or “LESS”. If answered correctly the caller receives an alarm clock.

On 17 November 2006, the Welshie Calling feature was pulled midway through its broadcast, this was followed by a few seconds of silence after which Johnny Vaughn appologised and the broadcast went straight to adverts. Later on a formal apology was made for the broadcast and Welshies part of the capitalFM website has been pulled. At this moment in time it is not known what happened, but complaints from the public were made. This was suspected to be a publicity stunt to boost falling ratings.

Welshy calling has rarely been done lately.

= "Paper Review" =

Every morning Johnny comments on the newspapers. - Discontinued.

"Who Are You"

Early in the show a caller will be given a secret identity, and then the gang will ask them questions to try and deduce who they ‘are’. If the gang cannot guess correctly, then the caller wins an alarm clock and other listeners can text in their answers.- Discontinued.

Guests and Podcast

Johnny has had many guests on his morning show, including Gordon Ramsay, Pierce Brosnan, George Michael and The Pussycat Dolls. Most of Johnny’s interviews are put on his podcast.
