The 1988 Soul Train Music Awards ceremony was hosted by Dionne Warwick on Wednesday, March 30, 1988 at the
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium - Santa Monica, California.

Performers included Alexander O'Neal, Natalie Cole, Kool Moe Dee, The Whispers, Smokey Robinson, LL Cool J, Hiroshima, George Duke, Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills, Angela Winbush, Ronald Isley, Dionne Warwick, Howard Hewett, Patti LaBelle, the Edwin Hawkins Singers, Gladys Knight & the Pips.

Presenters included Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, L. A. Reid, Sheena Easton, The Winans, Anita Baker, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr., Whodini, Morris Day, Lisa Hartman, Jody Watley, David Sanborn, LeVert, Paul Rodríguez, Magic Johnson, Stephanie Mills, Natalie Cole, Marlon Jackson, Dawnn Lewis, The Deele, Blair Underwood, Heavy D & the Boyz, Dianne Reeves, Run-D.M.C., Donna Mills, Thomas Hearns, Eric Dickerson, Chaka Khan, Eric B., MCA, Flavor Flav, Tony Terry, Glodean White, Barry White, Tim Reid and Daphne Maxwell Reid, and George Howard.

Best New Artist winner Miki Howard revealed on the New York Radio Show "The Wendy Williams Experience" that after she had won the award, presenter Anita Baker pulled her aside backstage and said "put this on your mantel and keep it dusted off because this is the only one you're ever going to get!" This prompted Wendy Williams to scream and laugh hysterically.
