History
Nine women opened Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital to the public on January 1, 1897, at a time when most medical treatment in the area was in its infancy and most medicines were derivatives of herbs or flowers. Between 3,000 and 5,000 citizens toured the new Dixon Public Hospital on New Year’s Day. Many changes and additions took place on the site where the original hospital was built. The hospital added the Intensive Care Unit in February 1972, the Cardiac Evaluation and Rehabilitation in August 1977, the Emergency Department in April 1978, the Home Care Department in June 1976, the Medical Arts Clinic in January 1973, and the
Renal dialysis Unit in October 1978. In the 1980s several significant additions further expanded the hospitals facilities. The configuration of the hospital's interior continues to change to meet the needs of current medical practice. In June 2006, a $3,000,000 state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Services Lab and a newEndoscopy area were added. It also does provide a full service of psychiatric care, ranging from inpatient to outpatient services.
