Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart is a private high school located in Madison, Wisconsin. Located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Madison, it is run by the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters. In the 2006-2007 School year, it enrolled approximately 600 students. In recent years the enrollment has been on the rise, even prompting a waiting list to be created when the class reached capacity. Also on the "Edgewood Campus" is the Edgewood College and the Edgewood Campus School, an elementary and middle school.

Edgewood began in 1871 as Saint Regina Academy, an all-girls boarding school. Governor Cadwallader Washburn donated his official residence, "Edgewood Villa," after losing a bid for re-election. Saint Regina Academy continued to operate until a fire in 1895 destroyed the original building. Less than a year after the fire the school re-opened as the Academy of the Sacred Heart. Boys were first admitted in 1924. In 1927, the original building was completed according to the design of architect Albert Kelsey, son-in-law of Governor Cadwallader Washburn, under the name Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart. Recently celebrating its 125th anniversary, the school has history dating back to Samuel Mazzuchelli and Governor Cadwallader Washburn who once owned the land Edgewood sits on.

Academics

Edgewood boasts a large variety of college preparatory courses including twelve different departments and 128 credit eligible courses. The school also provides a large pool of AP (Advanced Placement) courses for high achieving students including Calculus AB, Calc BC, Spanish, French, Latin, English Lit, English Language, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, European History, U.S. History, Physics: Mechanics, Physics: Electricity and Magnetism. It should also be noted that 1/3 of juniors and 1/2 of seniors during the 2006-7 year took at least one AP course, many taking upwards of three, four, or five during that single year. A large portion of students are continuously on the Honor Roll and pride themselves on intelligent discussion and research.

Athletics

Edgewood has done extremely well in the world of athletics, both before and after its move to the WIAA and the Badger South conference. During its six plus years of being in the WIAA it has been a force to be reckoned with in many sports. Girl's Golf has been ruled by Edgewood, as they have won the state title each of the last seven years (2 in Division 1 and the last 5 in Division 2). This mark leads all schools in team championships won for the sport. It is also the longest consecutive championships streak for any girls sport in state history.

The football team has finished in the top three of the Badger South in almost every season, and has made the playoffs in all but one year, including advancing to the third round in both the 2006 and 2007 season.

Boys and girls basketball have also enjoyed much success, with the boys in contention for the Badger South title each year and also winning the state title in 2002, while the girls have enjoyed recent success with winning the Badger South in the 2005-6 season and being competitive during the 2006-7 season.

Boy's golf as well has won numerous conference titles, being one of the top ranked teams in the state every year.

Boy's and girl's tennis are also a force in the state, as the boys have advanced to state four years running, and the girls are always in contention for the conference crown.

Baseball also holds a state title in the 2004 season and recently won the Badger South.

Hockey as well has won many conference titles and has been in contention for the state title for the past few years including advancing to the State Title game in 2008 finishing runner-up to Eau Claire Memorial.

Lastly, boy's and girl's soccer have enjoyed much success, both winning conference titles this past season and looking to continue their winning ways.

Co-curriculars

While Edgewood is small by comparison to its neighboring public schools, it still holds pride in the amount of co-curriculars it has, 27 to be exact. Many of these clubs are mainly student-founded, organized, and lead, including the highly popular Outdoor Cooking Club and Ultimate Frisbee.

Edgewood also contains an outstanding drama department. After long time director Pam Hansen-Stewart resigned to her teaching role, Andy Abrams from Four Seasons Theater, a local theater group in Madison, took over the job. The school recently produced the extremely hilarious rendition of "The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)" in the fall of 2006 and in the spring of 2007 produced the very popular "Little Women, the Broadway Musical," enjoying standing-room-only crowds for every performance.

Edgewood in the community

All students at Edgewood are required to perform 100 hours of community service during their four years at the school, and many of the students double and triple the required amount. Along with this requirement, Edgewood, as a school, participates in a day called Edgewood in the Community during its Homecoming week. On this day all of the students, faculty, staff, and many parent volunteers go out to many places around the Madison area to perform service to the Madison community. This can be anything from cleaning someone's yard to performing for a nursing home.
