The World's Greatest Sinner

The World's Greatest Sinner

"The World's Greatest Sinner" is a 1962 film written, directed by, and starring Timothy Carey. The movie has obtained cult status among a small group. The plot concerns a man (played by Carey) who quits his day job and starts preaching radical ideas to an ever-growing crowd. Eventually, he gains a large group of followers who call him God and listen to his teachings about eternal life.

The film is a classic example of underground filmmaking, having been made outside of the studio system on a shoestring budget. The movie is also notable as featuring a score from a very young pre-Mothers of Invention Frank Zappa.

At about the same time, Zappa made a memorable appearance on "The Steve Allen Show", playing "music" on a bicycle. In the interview portion of the show, Zappa talked briefly about the movie and his soundtrack. Later, he played "a bicycle concerto" by plucking spokes and blowing through the handlebars. He also made other unusual sounds on the bicycle along with impromptu accompaniment from the studio orchestra. However, the music played on the Steve Allen TV show was not related to the music Zappa composed for the Timothy Carey film.
