James DeLaurier

James D. DeLaurier is an inventor and professor emeritus of the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. His research team designed the first microwave-powered aircraft, designed to be used as a high-altitude communications relay platform. His team, along with Jeremy Harris of the University of Illinois built the first engine-powered ornithopter, nicknamed Mr. Bill, and the first human-carrying ornithopter, called the Flapper. His laboratory also designed flapping-wing micro air vehicles modeled after insect and hummingbird flight. His research lab contained UTIAS's low-speed wind tunnel.

He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his PhD from Stanford University.
