Pen-y-Mount station was the northern terminus of the WHR(P). It opened on the 2 August 1980. At that time it consisted of a single platform with a run round loop and was intended to be a temporary terminus.

In 1990 a siding was laid into the yard for works trains. After the Ffestiniog Railway gained the authority to rebuild the WHR, it was decided to turn Pen-y-Mount station into a representation of a typical WHR station.

In 1996 a replica WHR corrugated iron station building was constructed. Its design is based upon the original Nantmor railway station. Subsequently genuine WHR fencing, including a kissing gate, was erected along the back of the platform.

In 2002 the northern end was remodeled, with the existing headshunt being replaced with a full crossover onto the future Ffestiniog line, and a new headshunt loading spur cite web |url=http://www.pontcroesor.co.uk/pym.htm |title=Pont Croesor Extension project ] .

In 2004 a siding was laid along the line of the future line to Harbour Station, this is known as the 'Harbour Siding'. This has seen extensive use during the building of the line to Traeth Mawr Loop, with rail and ballast being loaded from it. The siding has beem removed during the construction of the junction railway to Porthmadog Harbour being built ] .

In 2007 the line north to Traeth Mawr Loop was opened, and Pen-y-Mount stopped being a terminus. For the season only, it operated using this loop. For 2008 it will operate as a push pull train to the southern most section of the loop

During the 2007 Christmas work party a start was made on building the new down platform.

Once the rebuilding of the railway is complete in 2009 Pen-y-Mount will become a junction, with lines to Beddgelert, and both Porthmadog Termini.
