Kupapa

Kupapa

Kūpapa is a Māori-language term used to describe Māori fighting for the Government in the New Zealand Land Wars of the nineteenth century . Also described as Queenites (from Queen Victoria) or Loyal Māori, their motives for fighting against other Māori were often based on traditional tribal rivalry, old scores or a pragmatic decision to benefit from the trade provided by settlers.

The term has also a modern usage in a derogatory sense to describe a Māori who is seen as being on the Pākehā side and acting against the interests of the Māori community.
