The song, which has an acoustic arrangement featuring a string section, became the band's first major hit, peaking at #8 in the US and #14 in the UK.

In the documentary '99 Love Life & Rock 'n' Roll, O'Riordan says that the song is about her first serious kiss.

In Adam Sandler's 2006 film "Click", the song is featured first in a flashback, and later in a wedding scene featuring a cameo by Dolores O'Riordan. Both "Linger" and "The Cranberries" are mentioned.

Covers

Brazilian TV host Angélica (famous for hit "Vou de Táxi") sing a cover version called "Se A Gente Se Entender", that sold well on Brazilian charts: was #82 on the radio according with Hot 100 Brasil. The song has a music video too. Chicago punk band Screeching Weasel covered the song on their album Emo.
