Herder Memorial Trophy

Herder Memorial Trophy

The Herder Memorial Trophy, or Herder, is the championship trophy of senior ice hockey in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is the most prestigious hockey championship solely dedicated to Newfoundland, and as a result, has a significant following within the province. Herder games are usually held at Mile One Centre (and before it was built, at Memorial Stadium) in St. John's and frequently sell out the 6,000 seat building. Games are also held in the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook. The trophy was donated by William James Herder, the first publisher of the Evening Telegram newspaper.

Only one Herder champion has ever won the Allan Cup, the national championship trophy of Canadian senior hockey - the 1986 Corner Brook Royals. That was also the last time a Newfoundland team competed for the Allan Cup.
