Tehran ,Iran , offering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in different fields.
Being established in 1919 as "The Central Teachers Institute", it was changed to the "Higher Institute for Tarbiat Moalem" in 1928, gained Collegiate status in 1963, gained university status in 1967 and then was renamed to "Kharazmi (PerB|خوارزمي)" in 2000.
Today the university is one of the largest universities in Iran with faculties of Engineering, Mathematical Sciences & Computer Engineering, Letters and Humanities, Psychology & Education, Physical Education & Sport Sciences and Chemistry. It has a second campus located inHesarak nearKaraj , inaugurated in 1986.
There are also similar "Tarbiat Moalem" teacher training institutes scattered throughout the country as well, which are independently managed and are not related to the university.History
Tarbiat Moalem University was initially founded, in 1919, as the "Central Teachers Institute". The objective of this institute was to train teachers for primary schools.
In 1928, it was changed to the "Higher Institute for Tarbiat Moaalem", because of the growing demand for trained teachers in the country.
In 1933, the institute was renamed to "Tarbiat Moaalem College". After the establishment ofUniversity of Tehran , the literature division of the Tarbiat Moaalem College turned into the College of Literature and its Science Division changed to the College of Sciences of Tehran University, and the Tarbiat Moaalem College practically lost its independence, although it continued to exist in name.
In 1958, however, the bill for the independent organization of the college was passed in both Houses of the Parliament and the Tarbiat Moaalem College was re-established as an independent higher institution.
The college was dissolved again in 1963, according to an article approved by the government, and another institution "The Institution for Tarbiat Moalem and Educational Research" took its place.
In the winter of 1967, following the establishment of the "Ministry of Higher Education" in Iran, "Tarbiat Moalem College" was granted university status.
In 1974, at the suggestion of the Ministry of Higher Education and the approval of the Council for the Expansion of Higher Education, "Tarbiat Moalem College" turned into "Tarbiat Moalem University". The University's first board of trustees was established in accordance with the1967 code for the board of trustees at Tehran University.
In October 1975, two other Tarbiat Moaalem Colleges (Arak and Kashan) fell under the supervision of Tarbiat Moaalem University. The College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences as well as part of the University Science Complex were also annexed to the university in 1983. Two other branches of the university were established in Sabzavar and Tabriz in 1987 and 1989, respectively. Finally, all the branches of the university were given independent status in 1990 in accordance with the directives of the Council for the Expansion of Higher Education. In 1995, as the university's first engineering department, the department of "Computer Engineering" was established as a division of the faculty of "Mathematical Sciences", and after that, the independent faculty of Engineering started its activity in 2005 with the departments of Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Information Technology.
Due to variety of educational fields that the university is offering today and also because of the fact that the university's main area of activities is not just "training teachers" any more, there have been discussions on renaming the university and finally in 2000 the university was renamed to Kharazmi (PerB|خوارزمي), the name of a great Persian scientist.Campus
The university has two campuses, one in the heart of
