- Phoenix of New Orleans
Phoenix of New Orleans, or PNOLA, was formed by residents, volunteers and donors after the devastation of
Hurricane Katrina . Since November 2005, it has become one of the most active disaster recovery and community associations for Tulane/Gravier - a historically poor, badly flooded and widely neglected downtown neighborhood inNew Orleans .Tulane/Gravier is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the nation and one of the most badly flooded and damaged areas in New Orleans. PNOLA was formed to fight back and rebuild something better than what had previously existed.
Activities and Plans
PNOLA's goal is to provide sustainable relief services, to restore damaged housing and to foster a community foundation for the physical, personal, family and economic growth of Tulane/Gravier. It also provides important resources and information for hurricane victims citywide, working closely with
Mercy Corps , Relief Spark,Habitat for Humanity ,Catholic Charities andAmerican Red Cross .PNOLA combines the relief and recovery efforts of a volunteer based non-profit organization with the grassroots community development efforts of a neighborhood association.
PNOLA is actively seeking help from people who would like to volunteer, buy a custom brick, join the Friends of PNOLA, or lend skills and advice to help it rebuild New Orleans for the next decade and beyond.
Status and Governance
PNOLA is led by a board of residents and a band of
Americorps volunteers and is a501(c)(3) organization. The Great Order of the Phoenix of New Orleans is a professional advisory and support council dedicated to helping PNOLA, Tulane/Gravier and the people of New Orleans.External links
